How Secure Is Your Business?
Whether your business is large or small, it has the need for security in one form or the other. And, if you are like most business owners today, you have made a substantial investment in your company. So what is the best way to protect it? To begin with, evaluate your current building security. The Better Business Bureau recommends that you consider the following questions in assessing how secure your business is:
• Do you have lights at all entrances?
• Are the lights protected from vandals and thieves?
• If you have fences or walls, is it possible to get over or under them?
Are they in good condition? Are gates left unsecured?
• Is employee parking separate from parking for the general public?
How close to the building is it? Is there enough lighting?
• Are your address numbers legible and visible from the street?
• Can doors be pried open? Are they solid in construction?
Do they have reliable dead bolts?
Are your closing procedures listed and uniform?
• Are your windows secured with screw locks, pins or sturdy cranks?
Are there drapes or blinds that prevent would-be thieves from
seeing inside your property?
• Have your employees been trained in crime awareness and prevention?
• Do you have a foolproof system to keep track of key distribution?
Do you know how many copies have been made?
• Are your trash bins enclosed and locked?
• Are your loading decks well marked and secure?
• Do you have an alarm system and a prominent sign announcing that fact?
